A weight loss pioneer passed away this week. Jean Nidetch, founder of Weight Watchers, brought to light a different approach to the weight loss journey that, up until that time, had never been done. She brought people together where they could talk about their struggles with food and weight loss. She made it okay to verbalize how they felt about food. Through that process, people developed a connection with something bigger than their own struggles. They garnered strength and became accountable for their choices.

The Weight Watchers program never touted itself as a quick fix; rather, it is a sensible approach to food. There is no good food or bad food; there is just too much food. This sensible approach isn’t snazzy. Participants were told not to expect a fast result. Ms. Nidetch is quoted as saying, “it’s choice, not chance, that determines your destiny.” She helped people delve into what that choice could mean for them.

A powerful tool in behavior change, group support can help one feel heard and recognized for where they are in their journey toward a healthier version of themselves. If you are considering making a change for better health, try looking for a community that will accept you where you are and support your efforts.  According to the Social Cognitive Theory, the more you can observe others achieve what you seek, the more likely you will begin to change, too. This is what Jean Nidetch discovered in her living room. If you are looking for ways to meet others in your quest for better health, here are 3 ways to get you going:

  1. Check out Weight Watchers website. Click the meeting tab and enter your zip code.
  2. Check out your local adult education program. The offer a wide range of classes geared to a wide audience.
  3. Start a walking group at your work. I remember years ago I started a walking group at work. We walked for about 30-40 minutes at our lunch hour. What I liked about it is we got to know each other outside of the work setting; it was a great bonding time and a mental vacation for us all.

As the health and fitness industry continues to evolve, one aspect integral in that evolution is the power of working together.  Find your tribe for friendship, health, fun and success.
