Let’s have dessert for breakfast!
For an inside look on what goes on in the world of breakfast cereal, food manufacturers, government guidelines and our children’s health, read this article. My oh my. It may have you think twice before putting that box in your grocery cart.
This article reminded Sister of a little story.
Sister was in France recently. While at the Super U grocery store, her teenagers picked up a box of French Rice Krispies cereal. Don’t judge. Sister is aware of the nutritional value (hello empty calories!). Sister has to pick and choose her battles. The next morning, Sister’s teenagers were slurping their cereal and exclaimed, “Huh, this tastes different.” Upon tasting it herself, Sister had to agree. The French version of Rice Krispies was not as sweet or salty. They were not as shiny, either. They tasted, well, a bit bland. And dry.
Now that got Sister thinking. Why is there a difference between the French and American version of the same cereal? Why should American kids be conditioned to sweet cereal just because the food manufacturers make it so?
Sister says let’s let our kids suffer for their health. Let’s hear it for bland and dry! Down with sugar cereals!! Up with health!
PS. The teenagers were able to get beyond the bland dry texture. They added bananas.
