Let's Contra dance! In keeping with the adage, “Find your activity, find your fun,” let’s discover contra dancing!

Contra dancing is a partnered folk dance where partners dance in two facing lines. Contra dance lovers  skip, swing and shed away calories all the while having a grand time.

What is really fun about contra dancing is that there is live music and a caller – similar to square dancing. The music has its’ orgin in Irish, Scottish and French Canadian melodies. The caller guides the participants  through a variety of dances. Visit any contra dance event and you will see people from all walks of life enjoying an active life.  It is good, clean wholesome fun that the whole family can enjoy.

Contra dance originally evolved from English country dancing; although there is some mystery to its’ actual origin. The French like to think that they had a hand in this cultural phenomenon. And when it comes to culture, I don’t want to argue with the French. It is safe to say, however, that contra dance is especially popular in North America.
