I recently watched a TED Talk which highlighted the importance of body language and hormones. You mean to tell me that there is actually a relationship between body language and circulating hormones? Geez! Is there no end to this whole mind body connection thing?

It turns out that when your body assumes what is termed a “high power” pose, you feel more assertive, confident and comfortable than when the body assumes a “low power” position. Characteristics of a high power position include, chest out, hands over head, strong arms, head high and smiling. Alternatively, a low power pose dons rounded shoulders, head down, feet drawn underneath – a smallness if you will. The hormone testosterone increases (power hormone) and cortisol decreases (stress hormone) when assuming a high power pose. Furthermore, these poses only need to be performed for 2 minutes. Two minutes to your own greatness.

So what does that mean for someone trying to get more active on a daily basis?

Be aware of your body position. Shoulders back and down, core connected or tight, head in neutral. Hold your chest open. Assuming this “high power” position sends positive vibes to the brain which changes how you feel about yourself. Self-talks become words to lift you up. Think about a ballet teacher training students: head up, shoulders down, tummy tight. So instead of walking into that fitness class slumped over, walk in as though you are happy to be alive. Before doing anything physical, give yourself two minutes to assume your power pose.  My favorite quote from this talk is this one, “Don’t fake it until you make it, fake it until you become it.”

Those are beautiful words to live by.

Over and out.
